An all in one computer, also known as AIO, is a personal computer that houses its internal and external hardware components, with the exception of the input devices like mouse and keyword, inside a single case, which is usually the monitor itself. Among the components included are floppy drives, CD-ROM drives, USB ports, etc. Some older AIOs had also included built-in keyboards into the machine. However, most all in one computers don’t include audio amplification circuitry. An external device is usually needed if users want to use standard unpowered speakers for better sound quality or audio reproduction.

One of the first all in one computer ever made was the HP 9830, introduced by Hewlett Packard in 1972. This machine is basically a computer geared for use of scientists and engineers, the reason why it is not really popular. The most popular AIO developed was called the Commodore PET that was launched in 1977. It included a small keyboard and a 9-inch blue and white monitor both integrated into the machine. Some other examples of all in one computer include the Atari 800, Commodore 64, Macintosh 128 and Macintosh 512. Apple continued designing and manufacturing AIOs through their Mac Classic and Mac Color Classic lines, until the 2000s with the iMac computers.

Right now, all in one computers are losing their edge because of the popularity of laptops. Though all in one computers aim to be a portable device for people on the go, laptops are the more mobile option for computing.
